Plenty of skilled South Africans can do the work but have no certificate to prove it. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is the formal route to turn experience into a recognised qualification.
What RPL is
RPL assesses what a person already knows and can do — regardless of how they learned it — against a qualification's outcomes. If the evidence shows competence, credits or a full qualification can be awarded.
Who it suits
Experienced workers without formal certificates, people changing careers, and anyone whose skills outpace their paperwork. It is also used for access into further study.
The process
- Pre-screening and advice against a target qualification.
- Gathering evidence of existing competence.
- Assessment by a registered assessor, often with a challenge PoE or practical.
- Moderation and certification of the result.
Evidence that works
Work samples, employer testimonials, logbooks, prior certificates, and demonstrations. The same rules as any PoE apply: sufficient, authentic, current and relevant.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is RPL cheaper than studying?
Often, and faster — but it still requires rigorous assessment. It rewards genuine experience, not shortcuts.
Can RPL give a full qualification?
Yes, where the candidate can prove competence across all the outcomes. Otherwise partial credits are awarded.
